EAST AFRICAN NATIONS FACE WORST DROUGHT IN 60 YEARS
The URJ in partnership with the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief and the American Jewish World Service are providing relief during this crisis. The countries of Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti are experiencing life threatening drought conditions. As a result millions of people are in desperate need of food and water. The worlds largest REFUGEE CAMP, Dadaab in Kenya has been overwhelmed with tens of thousands of people fleeing the famine. Livestock and crops are deteriorating and malnutrition is on the rise. The UN Secretary General has determined that 12.4 million people need urgent humanitarian assistance.
To paraphrase, Fran Kraft, TBO Social Action co-chair, "While we understand people within our own community are very much in need, they arent walking hundreds of miles for water and watching their children perish on that journey. We need to help in any way we can."
